EMTs and Paramedics

Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Short Certificate

See Details

The Emergency Medical Services Program offers three levels of certification: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), and Paramedic. Since its beginning at WCC in 1976, the Emergency Medical Services program has prepared over 3,400 individuals for employment in local health care agencies or service to their local communities. Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the EMS Professions (CoAEMSP), the Emergency Medical Services program seeks to meet healthcare needs of the local community. In addition to training EMS professionals, the EMS program also offers courses for individuals, from the lay rescuer to those in other professions.

The EMT level of training is completed in one semester and allows the entry-level EMT to manage both medical and trauma patients. The AEMT level of training is also completed in one semester and allows those at an EMT level to advance in skill preparation and job opportunities. Specific tasks that those certified at this level are allowed to perform vary greatly from state to state, but students learn advanced skills such as the use of advanced airway devices, intravenous fluids, and some medications. The Paramedic level of certification requires three additional semesters of program training and is combined with degree and/or certificate-required academic courses. Paramedics provide more extensive pre-hospital care than do EMTs or AEMTs. In addition to carrying out the procedures of the other levels, paramedics administer medications orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs), perform endotracheal intubations, and use monitors and other complex equipment. However, like the AEMT, procedures paramedics are permitted to do vary by state. EMTs, AEMTs and Paramedics work in a variety of settings including industry, fire-rescue, ambulance, aircraft and emergency centers.

Auto Mechanic

Automotive Technology Certificate

See Details

The Automotive Technology program is designed to provide the necessary educational background and practical training to repair today’s automobiles and light trucks. Theoretical knowledge and practical experience are combined to provide students with the occupational skills needed to be successful.

Automotive service technicians inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks that run on gasoline, electricity, or alternative fuels such as ethanol. Automotive service technicians’ and mechanics’ responsibilities have evolved from simple mechanical repairs to high-level, technology-related work. The increasing sophistication of automobiles requires workers who can use computerized shop equipment and work with electronic components while maintaining their skills with traditional hand tools.

Today, integrated electronic systems and complex computers regulate vehicles and their performance. Technicians must have an increasingly broad knowledge of how vehicles' complex components work and interact. They must also be able to work with electronic diagnostic equipment and digital manuals and reference materials.

The Automotive Technology program is accredited by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation/Automotive Service Excellence (NATEF/ASE)

Physical Therapy Assistant

Physical Therapy Assistant, A.A.S.

See Details

Physical therapy is a dynamic profession with an established and scientific base and widespread clinical applications in the restoration, maintenance, and promotion of optimal physical function. Physical therapy is defined as the care and services provided by or under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. Physical therapist assistants work under the direction and supervision of physical therapists to provide physical therapy interventions that require specialized knowledge and skills.

Wallace Community College accepts the responsibility for supplying students with opportunities to learn the necessary information and skills and to obtain clinical practice required for state licensure/regulation and entry-level competence in the field. As educators, faculty model the processes of learning, adapting, and changing as the environment and culture changes in accordance with sound scientific developments in education, instructional delivery methodology, medical science, and physical therapy science. We believe in providing our students with more than just manual skills. We believe that our students should know not only the “how to,” but the “why.” This should produce thinking individuals who will continue to grow and learn after they graduate and be able to demonstrate respect for the uniqueness of every individual.

It is the student’s responsibility, however, to fully utilize the opportunities provided by this educational program. Additionally, the choice of a career is a personal decision, and, having chosen a particular profession, the individual must assume the profession’s inherent responsibilities and adhere to established professional ethics and standards of practice. As students, individuals begin the process of becoming physical therapist assistants and must constantly learn and adapt to different situations, patients, treatment techniques, disease processes, and other conditions.

Practical Nursing Certificate

See Details

The philosophy of the nursing programs is consistent with the mission, goals and objectives of The Alabama Community College System. The programs provide curricula to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for entry level employment in practical and professional nursing. The teaching-learning process is a shared responsibility between faculty and students where faculty serve as facilitators of learning. The successful teaching-learning process requires an environment that promotes learning, considers the needs of the individual, and provides opportunities for student participation and educational goal attainment. The learning process is based on principles of critical thinking and is enhanced by the presentation of information from simple to complex. Learning is achieved when there is evidence of a change in behavior within the cognitive, affective, and/or psychomotor domains. Individuals have the right to achieve self-actualization and society provides educational opportunities.

Nursing education is a learner-centered process which combines general education and nursing courses to prepare the individual for the practice of nursing. The Respiratory Therapist Program is a five semester course of study consisting of 76 semester hours of general education and respiratory therapist classes leading to an Associate in Applied Science Degree. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), and is recognized by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Comparable data related to student/graduate outcomes for this and all programs accredited by CoARC can be found at https://www.coarc.com/Students/Programmatic-Outcome-Data.aspx. Both didactic and clinical training are provided to enable each graduate to function as an assistant to the physician in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of effective respiratory therapy. Graduates also serve as educational and therapeutic resources for patients who suffer disorders of the cardiopulmonary system. The Program educates individuals to become respiratory therapists capable of administering respiratory care based on the application of principles and concepts involved in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases and related abnormalities, both in traditional and non-traditional settings. Graduates are eligible to attempt the Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination (TMC), which is designed to objectively measure essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required of entry-level respiratory therapists, as well as determine eligibility for the Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE). There are two established cut scores for the TMC Examination, the first of which earns one the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential, and a higher cut score that qualifies examinees to sit for the CSE. Individuals who attempt and pass the TMC with the higher cut score, and attempt and pass the CSE, will be awarded the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential. Graduates of this program who complete these national examinations also meet criteria for licensure in states where licensure is required.
