York Technical College’s service area of York, Chester and Lancaster counties represents one of the hubs for economic development in SC. This development is driving a need for workers in a variety of fields including utilities such as telecommunications, infrastructure, and electrical. Specialized training is needed to work with the tools and equipment required for safe installation and repair of underground and overhead utilities. In the Utility Line Worker program, students work in both classroom and field lab settings to learn theory and applicable hands on training. Upon completion of the initial certificate, students are prepared for entry level careers in the utility industry with options to continue their training for more advanced skill development.

Building Construction Management Certificate
See DetailsThe Building Construction Management certificate program prepares students in the skills of carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring and construction management. This program also provides training in operating a construction business, estimating material costs, and scheduling construction projects. Students must complete one of the following certificated before enrolling in the Building Construction Management Certificate: HVAC Installer, HVAC Service Technician, HVAC Systems Design, Residential/Commercial Carpentry, Residential/Commercial Plumbing, or Residential/Commercial Wiring. Due to a growing shortage of skilled-trades people and a growing number of position openings, this program has very high job placement for graduates seeking employment. The Building Construction Trades programs are credentialed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Home Builders Institute (HBI).

The secondary technical specialty is a minimum of 12 semester hour credits from an approved degree/diploma, or a technical education certificate program that is currently offered at the College, or mix of credits awarded for coursework from any program, military training, experiential learning, and/or testing.

See DetailsGet started on your career as a Commercial Truck Driver! This 200-hour course will help prepare you to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Through a combination of classroom and driving instruction, you will learn trucking regulations, operations and safety in truck transportation, map reading and logbook management. You will also learn how to perform pre-trip inspections, procedures for coupling/uncoupling and sliding fifth wheel and trailer tandems. Coaching and practice on the driving range will help you build skills in braking, shifting and backing. You will progress to the road where you will practice shifting techniques, engine RPM management, stops, starts and turns. A Commercial Learner’s Permit is required prior to registering for this course.
