What Does an Electro-Mechanical Technician Do?

Do you want to work with some of the most advanced machinery in the manufacturing industry? Electro-mechanical technicians combine mechanical technology with electronics. They operate, test and maintain automated, robotic or electro-mechanical equipment.

They work alongside mechanical and electrical engineers. Their expertise is needed in the energy, computer, plastic and aerospace industries. Worksites can vary from a factory setting to an oil drilling rig in the ocean.

Education + Training

Electro-mechanical technician jobs typically require an associate degree or a certificate. Training for electro-mechanical technicians is offered at technical schools and community colleges. Students sometimes specialize in specific areas, such as electro-mechanics, also called mechatronics, industrial maintenance or process control. Training in mechatronics provides an understanding of mechanical systems, electronic systems, control systems and computer systems — the key systems on which this occupation works.

Additional certification isn’t required but it may open up new job opportunities. Certifications are available in electrical power testing, Certified Control Systems or industrial instrumentation.

A related job that requires more training is a electro-mechanical technologist.

You May Be a Good Fit for This Position If You
  • Are extremely detail-oriented
  • Have good dexterity for using specific tools
  • Excel at math
  • Have strong mechanical skills
  • Communicate well
